LOLER (Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) is UK legislation that requires lifting equipment used at work to be safe, suitable for its intended purpose, properly maintained, & thoroughly examined at regular intervals. The regulations are designed to reduce the risk of accidents & ensure lifting operations are carried out safely.
Equipment Requiring Inspection Under LOLER
LOLER applies to lifting equipment & lifting accessories used for lifting or lowering loads. This includes:
- Overhead cranes & gantry cranes
- Jib cranes & monorails
- Electric & manual hoists
- Chain slings, wire rope slings, & textile slings
- Shackles, eyebolts, lifting points, & hooks
- Lifting beams & spreader beams
- Winches & lifting devices
- Forklift lifting attachments
- Personnel lifting equipment & accessories
How Often Does My Equipment Require Inspection Under LOLER?
The frequency of thorough examinations depends on the type of equipment & how it is used:
- Every 6 months – Lifting accessories (e.g. slings, shackles, eyebolts, hooks) & equipment used for lifting people.
- Every 12 months – Lifting equipment used for lifting loads (e.g. cranes, hoists, lifting beams).
- In accordance with a Written Scheme of Examination – Where a competent person has specified alternative examination intervals.
- Following exceptional circumstances – Such as overloads, damage, repairs, modifications, or long periods out of service.

What is PUWER?
PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) is UK legislation that requires work equipment to be safe, suitable for its intended use, properly maintained, & used only by trained & competent personnel. The regulations apply to almost all equipment used in the workplace & are designed to protect employees & others from harm.
Equipment Requiring Inspection Under PUWER
PUWER applies to a wide range of work equipment, including:
- Workshop & manufacturing machinery
- Pallet trucks & forklift attachments
- Access equipment & work platforms
- Mobile plant & site equipment
- Conveyors & production equipment
- Any other equipment used by employees in the course of their work
How Often Does My Equipment Require Inspection Under PUWER?
PUWER does not specify fixed inspection intervals. Instead, equipment should be inspected:
- Before first use, where necessary to ensure safety.
- At suitable intervals, based on the type of equipment, frequency of use, and operating environment.
- Following installation or relocation, where safety could be affected.
- After exceptional circumstances, such as damage, modifications, repairs, accidents, or prolonged periods out of service.
